We realised that many of the really great brands of beauty products were Australian and they weren't very well known compared to the big multinational brands, so we now want to show them to the whole world - cosmetics, makeup, skin care, aromatherapy, sun care, tanning, fragrances, beauty products & more.

What led you to create Adore Beauty?
Well, as a total beauty product junkie, I've always been on the lookout for really great finds: products that were unique, interesting, and of course effective.
The only problem for most women is that they don't have access to these brands. Who's got time these days to traipse from store to store all day to find that one perfect lipgloss? Plus not everyone lives in a big city where these brands can be found... so I figured, put them all in one online boutique and then nobody has to miss out!

A blokes' approach to beauty
Ok guys, it’s time to clean up your act! Grooming is not just for girls. I know that the traditional packaging of skin and body care products has been pretty scary, pink and apricot coloured containers certainly don’t look very manly in the bathroom cabinet.
Things have certainly changed since the days of pretty fragranced cosmetics in fancy bottles. Cosmetic companies have finally cottoned on to the fact that guys need bloke-friendly skin care. There are now ranges especially for men with shaving kits and ingrown hair solutions, plus skincare products like eye gels and moisturisers designed just for male skin.
But first, let's address some of the grooming myths you might have grown up with!
Myth 1: Aftershave (as in alcohol-based men’s fragrance) is good to close the pores after shaving.
I think the "no pain no gain" philosophy is the source of this one-“the stinging means it’s doing something!”. Unfortunately this is not the case. Alcohol-based aftershaves can dry out and irritate the skin and make the skin photosensitive - i.e. more prone to pigmentation (dark blotches). Use a toner and then moisturizer to balance the skin instead! There are also plenty of cream-based aftershave products that are much better equipped to soothe the sting of shaving.
Myth 2: Moisturiser is for girls.
Not the case at all. Both male and female skin is composed of the same matter, and we all age; therefore we all need to treat our skin to moisturiser every day. Men’s skin actually gets some pretty harsh treatment with daily shaving (well perhaps the weekly shave for some of you blokes). A good toner and moisturizer can actually soothe the skin after shaving, leaving the pores and skin moist, less red and irritated and very kissable. To really impress, use a lip balm too!
Myth 3: who needs exfoliants anyway?
Exfoliating is an essential for men’s skin. Firstly it means that your moisturizer is able to be absorbed deeper into your skin as it is not ‘sucked up’ by superficial dead skin cells. Exfoliation is also a key step in preventing ingrown hairs, it can assist in lifting the growth that is trapped beneath the skin’s surface; and because we are clearing away dead skin cells there is less surface build up on the skin to cause the ingrowns! You will also find that regular exfoliating will make your skin feel a lot smoother and give it a healthy glow.
Myth 4: I only need to wear sunscreen at the beach.
No no no! I get so many emails from people who have neglected their sun protection and now have dark blotchy patches of pigmentation. The Australian sun is particularly harsh; but in any climate, the sun’s rays are not only cancerous but speed up the ageing process and cause pigmentation. Every skin routine should at least involve a daily cleanse, moisturize, eye cream and sunblock on top! If this seems like too many steps, you can get a moisturiser and sunscreen in one, such as Ultraceuticals Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF30+.
Myth 5: Cheap haircare, skincare and shaving products are just as good.
I am, for the most part, a believer that you get what you pay for and the proof is right there in the pudding - just read the ingredients listings and compare for yourself. Generally you will find that the cheap brands contain very basic synthetic ingredients. High quality skin care, shaving and hair care products will generally contain more active ingredients, botanical extracts and less irritating bases. You only get one body, so you may as well take good care of it!
Myth 6: If I can’t see results in a week, it’s not working.
Unfortunately skin is not like the backyard- you can’t just fix it all in a few days like they do in "Backyard Blitz"! Those wrinkles took years to get there, so they ain't going anywhere in a week I’m afraid. I always recommend that clients stick with a product or skin program for an absolute minimum of three months to begin to see results. Cellular turnover takes 28 days for new skin cells to reach the skin’s surface, so we are certainly going to have to give our poor pressured skin some time to keep up with our demands. Good things come to those who wait, so be patient!
Myth 7: Soap makes my skin feel squeaky-clean so it must be good.
Sorry boys - the facts will back me up on this one. The pH of our skin sits at 5.5 usually which means we have an acid pH. This "acid mantle" is essential for our skin’s ability to protect itself. Most major brands of soap researched had a pH of 9-10 making them very alkaline. This means that soap strips our skin’s protective barrier leaving it dry and exposed. A good cleanser will clean the skin just as well as soap does, without the drying effects - and generally with foaming and gel cleansers you get a two-in-one as you’ll find you’ll be able to shave with it too - Bargain!

Rosacea: a rescue from the redness?
To date I have had so many emails requesting help for a strange embarrassing redness that will not seem to go away…
Rosacea is a common and extremely frustrating skin condition that has baffled specialists as to any one major cause. There is certainly no miracle cure but what we do know is that there are definite irritants, including: alcohol, spicy foods, nicotine, changes in temperature, sun exposure and emotional upsets and stress.
Rosacea comes in many forms, and ranges from mild flushing mainly over the nose and cheek area to severe rhinophyma, a swelling of the connective tissue and sebaceous glands in the nose causing it to appear uneven and bulbous in extreme cases.
It is often referred to as Acne rosacea due to the red, irritated and uneven appearance - however it is not a form of acne. Unlike Acne, there are no comedones (blackheads), white heads or open pimples.
Rosacea may begin as mild but persistent flushing, if it worsens it may form papules (raised lumps) and erythema (dilated capillaries appearing very red). If it does get to a severe stage it may affect the eyes leaving them feel irritated, gritty and swollen. This may eventually lead to the stage of rhinophyma.
There are various options for treatment depending on the severity. Lifestyle is a key factor; avoiding the known irritants is step one. Step two would be to look at times when the flushing is worse, to try and figure out your triggers - are the more irritated periods at times of stress? What had been happening at these times regarding your lifestyle and diet? In this way you might be able to avoid the triggers that make your rosacea worse.
Maintaining a healthy skin routine and diet are essential elements in creating balance within the skin and body in order to promote improvement. Skin care products should be prescribed by a skin professional to soothe the condition with cleansers, toners and corrective products chosen to balance and calm the skin. Harsh and drying acne treatments are a no-no, and it's also a good idea to avoid anything that is highly fragranced.
Naturopathy may be useful in looking at the body’s internal balance, while homeopathy can be beneficial for some in looking at both physical and emotional harmony in the body. Topical cortisone (steroid cream) treatments and antibiotics are often prescribed for the condition by dermatologists, so this is another option you can consider. Skin professionals will often look at specific corrective treatments to use within a skin program to rebalance the irritated skin.
Other relaxation therapies addressing lifestyle such as massage and yoga may be helpful, particularly if you find that stress aggravates your rosacea. A combination of the above options is often valuable in treating both body harmony and skin health.
The following skin products are designed to treat rosacea:
- SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel- to be used as a corrective treatment day or night under a moisturiser.
- MD Formulations Critical Care Shielding Crème- to be used day or night as a moisturiser
- MD Formulations Critical Care Skin Repair Complex- to be used as a corrective treatment day or night under a moisturiser
- Dr.Hauschka Rhythmic Night Conditioner Sensitive - an intensive treatment good for times when the skin is stressed or in transition. Can be used as a booster treatment between 2- 6 times a year usually for a period of 28 days. They are used alone at night or under your moisturizer.
- Joey New York's Calm & Correct cleanser, toner and moisturiser
MD Formulations Facial Cleanser Basic is an excellent non-irritating cleanser for exceptionally sensitive, red skins. Its original formula was designed for babies in humidicribs with hyper sensitive skins.
Zinc based sunscreens (rather than those with a chemical base) may be less irritating on a skin with rosacea. Megan Gale's Invisible Zinc range is ideal, it contains no "chemical blockers" at all and gives excellent broad-spectrum protection to sensitive skin. It is available in the original version, to be used over a moisturiser; or in the Daywear formula, which is a sunscreen and moisturiser in one. SkinCeuticals also offers Physical UV Defense SPF30, which features a blend of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide with no chemical blockers.
Should you suffer from rosacea, please feel free to email for a personalised skin program to suit your lifestyle and general skin type. The above listed products can be very helpful when worked into a professional program specifically for your skin.
Winter SOS!
It’s mid winter - and if you didn’t feel bad enough already with that red nose from the flu that spread across the office, now your skin has decided to flake and your cheeks look like Grandma pinched them one too many times.
What to do?
Winter tends to leave its mark on most skins - the air dries out when summer’s lush humidity fades, and what we’re often left with is second rate skin, brittle hair and cracked lips (not to mention a lacklustre social life) due to the winter cold.
But do not sink further beneath the doona quite yet- there are some winter saviours!
Winter Face
If you are a sufferer of extremely dry skin, or if your eczema flares up due to the harsh cold (or indoor heating), you could invest in a humidifier. This will put much needed moisture back into the air, giving your skin the break it needs.
Generally in winter most skins will need to upgrade to a slightly richer moisturizer and ensure you use a serum that suits your skin’s needs underneath. A nourishing mask once a week can be a great conditioner for the skin during the winter months (have a look at the hit list below). If you find you have dry cheeks and your powder blush doesn’t sit quite right, try a cream blush: Bloom and Rosie Jane make some beautiful colours with a great texture that’s easy to apply with the fingers.
Winter still means sun damage, light is still reflected onto the skin and UV damage not only causes cancer but will create pigmentation damage and aging in the skin so ensure that you have a sun block that suits your skin as part of your skin care routine each day. The hit list below features a selection of sunscreens that also have moisturising benefits.
Winter Face Hit List:
Alpha-H 15% Glycolic Hydrating Mask gently exfoliates while giving the skin a hydrating boost.
SkinCeuticals C + E Serum gives the skin a moisture blast with antioxidant vitamins C and E assisting in the fight against aging
Ultraceuticals Ultra ACE Facial Treatment Cream, a great rich antioxidant night cream.
Alpha-H Hydra Defense Anti Age Serum - this is a rich serum with a carrot oil base to drench the skin with moisture and assist with cell repair.
Cellex-C G.L.A. Extra Moist Cream, a moisturizer for super dry skins, excellent for dermatitis and psoriasis.
Ultraceuticals UltraClear Exfoliating Gel will ensure your skin is flake free and you get maximum penetration of your moisturizer. (use twice a week)
Alpha-H Micro Cleanse features small beads with 12% glycolic acid to ensure your skin is exfoliated and fresh. (use twice a week)
Moisturising Sunscreen Hit List:
Ultraceuticals Protective Moisturiser SPF30+
Ultraceuticals Tinted Moisturiser SPF30+
Alpha-H Ultra-Protector Moisturiser with SPF30
Megan G Invisible Zinc Daywear Moisturiser SPF30+ (this one doesn't have any chemical sunscreen ingredients, so it is ideal for sensitive skins)
SkinCeuticals Ultimate UV Defense SPF30
Winter Hands
If dry hands are your problem, try using a quality hand cream and reapplying every time you wash your hands - there is a variety to choose from on the winter hit list below. For extra protection against the harsh cold invest in a pair of winter gloves, Mimco are currently making very cute mittens for something a little different.
Hands Hit List:
Ole Henriksen Hands Forward Creme SPF15
Ultraceuticals Ultra ACE Hand & Body Moisturiser
Dr.Hauschka Hand Cream
Dr.Hauschka Neem Nail Oil (a great one for dry cracked cuticles)
Cellex-C Hydra Hand Cream SPF15
Cellex-C Skin Firming Hand Cream (great for sun damaged/aged hands)
Winter Body
If you are finding your body circulation is sluggish due to the cold, and your legs appear a little dry, ensure you are exfoliating twice a week with a quality body exfoliant. You can couple this with a loofah mitt for extra oopmh. Exfoliating will ensure you get better value from your body oil or moisturizer as those dead surface cells will be gone - that way the moisture can be sucked up by the healthy cells that need it more!
Avoid traditional soaps to keep your skin supple, their pH (acidity level) is generally too high to be compatible with our skins so they can be drying. Try a quality body wash instead.
Body Hit List:
Dr.Hauschka Body Wash Floral – a pH neutral, soap free wash that won't dry out the skin.
Dr Hauschka Aromatherapy Baths - these are divine bath oils in different scents depending on your mood - great to nourish the skin while soaking! We especially love the Lavender Bath and Lemon Bath.
MD Formulations body creams- Moisture Defense Antioxidant Body Creme, Hand & Body Creme and Vit-A-Plus Hand & Body Creme - all fantastic quality, each dealing with a different body concern.
Jaqua - this range makes luscious hydrating shower syrups, body glazes and body butters in delicious warming scents like Steamy Chai Latte.
For a little fun try Femme Fatale and Cake - Femme Fatale specialise in boudoir-inspired bath soaks and body creams, while Cake make dessert-scented body lotions and shower gels.
Winter Lips
Chapped lips are so frustrating, and with so many second rate lip balms about, it’s hard to pick one that will actually nourish and soothe. A great balm is essential for any hand bag, brief case or satchel year round so pick one from the crème de la crème hit list below.
Lips Hit List:
Dr.Hauschka Lip Balm - botanical based quality lip saver!
Mama Cocos Hawaiian Lip Balm - Lemon+Aid - coconut oil base with healing lemon balm
Cake Kiss Silky Smooth Sheer Lip Butter smells like maple syrup and has a rich shea butter base
Ultraceuticals Ultra ACE Eye & Lip Serum - an excellent age preventative product for eyes and lips with antioxidants.
Winter Hair
Hair suffers too in the cold, and if you find you seem to be having more than your fair share of bad hair days, ensure you have a quality leave in nourishing/styling product. This way your hair gets a treatment and you get assistance with keeping it in place!
Hair Hit List:
MOP Leave In Conditioner
Kusco-Murphy Lavender Hair Creme - a nourishing styling cream that is ideal to help fight winter fog frizzies!
KEVIN.MURPHY Staying.Alive
Winter Feet
To deal with nasty cracked feet, start work now as spring is coming along with sandals and thongs. Ensure your feet are lush and smooth by using a specialized foot balm, you can then wear your new season nail polish with pride.
Feet Hit List:
MD Formulations Pedicreme - contains glycolic acid to help soften calluses and rough heels
Dr.Hauschka Fitness Foot Balm - moisturises and soothes dry feet
OPI Pedicure Soak - cleanses and softens feet - ideal to soak your feet in before applying your foot cream!
Qtica Overnight Intense Foot Repair Balm - brilliant for feet that are really dry and cracked - just put some on before bed and then wear socks over the top, your feet will be soft and smooth when you wake up!
Tanning
Missing the sunshine? Shake off the winter pallor and pretend you've been on a lovely tropical holiday by giving yourself a coat of self tanner. Skip the solarium, I know a "natural" tan is tempting but the UV damage to your skin is permanent and you'll regret it later!
Tanning Hit List:
St Tropez are the fake tan experts. The self-tan comes in mousse, lotion or mist formulas, along with support products - pre-tan exfoliator and body lotion. This is a great natural colour.
Megan Gale Jet Set Tan. Easy to apply and natural.
SHE Australia Instant Sunless Tan. A lotion with instant colour effect so you can see where you are putting it.
SHE Brazilian Bronzing Lotion. A wash off tan for those who just want to try out a tanned look occasionally.
With spring being only one month away, now is a good time to start to blast away the dryness so you can stride into the warmer months knowing your body is ready to bare at its best.
