Cubic Zirconia
This baby has come a long way! It is the most successful simulated diamond. Properties such as refraction, hardness, and specific gravity are remarkably similar to diamonds. It has dispersion slightly greater than a diamond, and this produces an abundance of colour play. It can imitate just about any gem you like! It’s very hard to distinguish Cubic Zirconia or “CZ” as it’s often referred to as, from genuine gemstones. Its debut to the market was in around 1978, the first cubic zirconia was made in Russia for the purpose of laser technology, the Russians did not have enough natural rubies needed at the time to generate laser beams so they set out to find a synthetic material that would have the properties of rubies, their development - Cubic Zirconia. Thank you!

Rhodium is part of the platinum family. Silver, gold, and even base metals were often Rhodium plated during the 30's and 40's to give them the white, shiny look associated with platinum, this is still a popular method used.
Gold Gold Plating
Gold jewellery can be of different Karats and colour. Most of the gold at Sassi is 9 Karat gold, this is relatively affordable and is not too soft, therefore will not easily scratch or dent like 24Karat gold may do. Pure gold is too soft to work with for jewellery, so it is usually alloyed with other metals such as silver, copper and zinc. Using different amounts of these metals will also give different colours. Yellow gold is gold with silver, copper and zinc. White gold also has copper and silver with extra zinc, nickel, and/or palladium for the white colour, Palladium is most likely used as only thin plating. Pink or rose gold has silver, copper, and zinc, with extra copper.

A little jewellery history Back to top
Since the beginning of time, it seems people have adorned themselves with jewellery of some kind. Remnants of jewellery have been found that are believed to be dated as far back as the stone age. There is also no doubt that in ancient Egypt and Rome jewellery was customary. Jewellery embodies a creativity and can often reflect a certain time or place.
Cocktail jewellery, now known as costume or fashion jewellery, made its big debut in the 1920s. Representing the roaring twenties with its colourful cocktail parties and the Charleston! Greatly influenced by Coco Chanel (1883 – 1971) and Elsa Schiaparelli (1890 – 1973), who both encouraged clients to mix costume jewellery with genuine jewels they already had. Both designers offered imagination and fun and could often be seen wearing fabulous cocktail pieces.
By the 1940s and 1950s, the prominence and influence of film stars greatly influenced fashion. It was popular to wear costume pieces emulating jewellery worn by screen idols, allowing everyone to have a little Hollywood glamour.
The Second World War in Europe brought an end to the production of fine jewellery when metals were rationed. Precious metal and genuine gemstone jewellery was simply not available. Quality costume jewellery began to flourish in this time, and has not stopped since!
Costume jewellery allows freedom to change your look everyday and allows you to have some fun! Pieces can replicate styles in history, and famous celebrities. Jewellery can be bold and adventurous or classic in style - anything you can imagine. It allows you to express who you are or want to be.
Jewellery care Back to top
With a little care your jewellery will look brand new all the time, below are some tips!
You should remove jewellery before doing tasks such as cleaning, showering or swimming, basically any task that may bring you into contact with chemicals.
It is easy to ensure your jewellery is always looking its best! To clean, use warm soapy water (non-detergent soap). Jewellery polishing cloths are also great to bring back the shine in sterling silver jewellery.
Use a soft brush such as a soft toothbrush to help remove dirt on claws of larger or more intricate pieces.
